National Counseling Programs

Each May during National Police Week activities in Washington, DC, COPS hosts the National Police Survivors' Conference. Law enforcement survivors from all across the nation gather for in-depth grief work and issue-oriented information sharing.

At the National Police Survivors' Conference, every group of survivors has access to mental health specialists and support from survivors of previous years.

Break-out seminar sessions are offered so that survivors with like concerns and issues can work together, finding solutions to their common problems. Special sessions are offered for surviving co-workers, significant others, fiancés, and extended family members as well. Children under the age of 18 can participate in the "C.O.P.S. Kids/Teens" Program.

 

Example of sessions include:

  • Surviving Spouses through Felonious Action, Drunk Driving Incidents, Accidental Action;

  • Surviving Mothers through Felonious Action, Drunk Driving Incidents, Accidental Action;

  • Surviving Fathers through Felonious Action, Drunk Driving Incidents/Accidental Action;

  • Surviving Siblings through Felonious Action, Drunk Driving Incidents, Accidental Action;

  • Surviving Adult Children through Felonious Action, Drunk Driving Incidents/Accidental Action;

  • Surviving Significant Others (fiancés, intimate friends, former spouses, parent of the officer's children);

  • Survivors of Other Types of Deaths (heart attack/natural causes, suicide, etc.);

  • Surviving Relatives and Friends;

  • Returning Survivors: A New Perspective--What's It Worth To You?

  • The Effects on Co-Workers After a Law Enforcement Officer's Death

  • Surviving Co-Workers of Friendly Fire/Friendly Action

  • Resolving Grief Alone - for widowed or single parents of deceased officers
